A heat exchanger is a system used to transfer heat between a source and a working fluid. Heat exchangers are used in both cooling and heating processes.

Key Functions of Heat Exchangers on Ships:
  • Engine Cooling:

Cooling engine components like the engine jacket, lubricating oil, and other systems.

  • Temperature Control:

Maintaining optimal temperatures in various systems for efficient operation.

  • Fuel Oil Preheating:

Heating fuel oil before combustion to improve efficiency and ensure proper combustion.

  • Hydraulic Oil Cooling:

Cooling hydraulic oil in hydraulic systems to prevent overheating and maintain proper lubrication.

  • Seawater Desalination:

Using heat exchangers to cool seawater during the desalination process.

  • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning:
Heat exchangers are used in refrigeration systems (evaporators) and air conditioning systems (condensers) for temperature control.
    Types of Marine Heat Exchangers:
    • Plate Heat Exchangers:

Consist of corrugated plates that create channels for fluid flow, offering high heat transfer efficiency and compact design.

    • Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers:
Feature a shell enclosing tubes through which one fluid flows, with the other fluid flowing around the outside of the tubes.
